Long ago, a little boy had five loaves of bread and two small fish. Jesus took it, gave thanks to God and proceeded to feed five thousand people. Before Jesus did this, the Disciples asked, but how far will these loaves and fish go among so many?My wife and I serve on the board of directors of Hope For the Children of Haiti, Inc. (HFC). HFC cares for the daily needs of 60 orphans. As an aside, we hope to one day adopt one of these children. You can learn more about HFC at http://www.hfchaiti.org/.
I was privileged to return to Haiti last week with several other directors. It was my 13th trip in the past decade. Yes, the 13th…and I survived!Food is very expensive in Haiti, so HFC’s mission teams always use their “check-in” bags to bring 100 lbs of food per person. Late the night before our 5:35 a.m. flight out of Boston, we discovered that a mix-up in bag preparation had yielded us bags of soap, shampoo and other toiletries. The orphanage was literally out of food and we were bringing soap! This late at night, there was nothing we could do…Inside one bag, we found one very TINY bag of rice. Our temptation was to throw it aside since we essentially were bringing none of the food requested by our Haitian Ministry Director. But instead, we took that very small bag of rice to Haiti…Once in Haiti we discovered that indeed the food storage room at the orphanage was literally empty. We visited several relief agencies to ask for food donations and came up empty with each visit. We visited the final relief agency and kindly requested a meeting with the director. She was very compassionate about our situation but could offer us nothing. After all, everyone in Haiti is hungry…Before we were set to leave, our team asked this woman one question, How can we Americans change Haiti for the better? With that one question, she and her associate spent an hour telling us many stories that gave us many ideas on how to relieve the plight of Haiti’s poor. She talked, we listened…for a whole hour. At the end of this discussion, she made a quick phone call and said, Pull your truck around back and I’ll see what I can do.You can imagine our surprise and joy when we pulled the truck around back and discovered that this woman was giving HFC over 4,000 lbs worth of food…including 2,500 lbs of rice! Bags and bags and bags and bags of rice…In our efforts, we were like that little boy in the story where Jesus fed the five thousand. We brought to Haiti one TINY bag of rice. But the Lord of the Harvest multiplied the blessing and supplied HFC with almost 2 months worth of rice…Will you pray for us and believe with us that the Lord of the Harvest will multiply the blessing of ministry fruitfulness upon LTH in the coming year. In our own effort, we cannot make this happen! But with the Lord of the Harvest, all things are possible.Happy Thanksgiving…
