On Tuesday April 20, 2010, Lead Them Home and InterVarsity will partner with Alliance (LGBT+ student group) to offer our “Gay and Evangelical Voices: Two Views, One Dialogue” event at Wheaton College in Norton, MA. The event will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 pm EPT and is being promoted on campus as “Crossing the Divide.” This event is very similar to the one LTH was invited to present at Brown University during their Queer Religion Week in 2007.
I would like to publicly thank InterVarsity and Alliance student executives who invited me to present our peacemaker event to them in early March. I would also like to thank them for taking risks to invite a ministry like mine to their campus. In a world of culture war over the issue of homosexuality, it is very difficult to organically sense trust among those “on the other side.” Imagine how difficult it must be for them to sense trust among evangelicals?
Anyone is welcome to attend this event. This panel discussion will feature 3 or 4 folks from the LGBT+ community who believe same-sex relationships are to be celebrated in connection with Christian faith. Our LTH group will be composed of 3 or 4 folks who have resisted ever going into or have felt convicted to come out of homosexuality. Instead of a debate, this panel will simply allow folks to share their own personal stories.
We often defer the moderator role to the LGBT+ community. In this case, it was mutually decided that the event will be co-moderated by executives of InterVarsity and Alliance. Following the moderators’ questions, there will be an open forum where audience members may ask questions of the panelists.
Our goal at LTH is to creatively find new ways to share the presence of Christ among those who feel that the evangelical church is pushing them away from Jesus. Our mission is not to score points or win a debate of personal experience, but rather to simply share the love of Jesus Christ through our personal stories. Our hope is that anyone in the audience who has seen the evangelical faith only through the lens of culture war might see more of Jesus than any of us.
Join us if you can. Pray for us if you cannot. Invite LTH to offer “Gay and Evangelical Views: Two Voices, One Dialogue” at your campus. Thanks for your prayers and support.
