Tonight, I “realized” that one of the panelists for tomorrow evening’s Crossing the Divide event at Wheaton College is a freshman at the very first college outreach event I ever participated in at an Ohio college on November 19, 2003. That day while I was flying to Ohio, Massachusetts became America’s first gay marriage state. I remember thinking about the irony of all this as I arrived the campus – yes, in fear.
Since 2003, Andrew has become a wonderful friend to our family. Andrew has lived without acting on his same-sex attraction – something quite difficult to do for a young man today. He has deep convictions and beliefs, yet he also has many special LGBT+ friends. He has one of the most authentic expressions of Christian faith that I know of. Importantly, he is not threatened by others’ beliefs. That frees him to reflect Christ.
I know Andrew so well, but it just hit me that our friendship began at the event described above. Now, he is joining me at this Wheaton event tomorrow. It is special to celebrate how God puts all this together.
