I will always remember the first email I received from Josh. I had met his father at Creation Fest where my ministry had a booth in the exhibit area. Josh (who is gay) never came by to say hi – the mere presence of my ministry made him very angry. He later recalled how he sneered at me in disgust.
After Creation Fest, our family left on vacation. On that trip, I received a long email from Josh. He introduced himself and I immediately recalled his father – a wonderful man. As I began reading his email, I could tell I was in BIG trouble. I would never be able to keep up with this – this kid!
Eighteen (18) years old (at the time), Josh had read all the Christian classics and every doctrinal interpretation of the biblical texts on homosexuality. He was a steady stream of “new and provable facts” that sent me into backfire more than a time or two. Within several weeks, I wondered – “When will this end!” Josh exhausted me. Or did his beliefs threaten me?
What did backfire look like? I became frustrated, defensive and impatient. I thought to myself, “That’s it! He is ridiculous, stubborn and demanding. I’m moving on.” Yet every time this backfire built up inside me, Jesus would say – “You’re going to walk away? I did not walk away from you.” Join me next time as I share what happened next. Josh will be joining in as my guest blogger to share his side of our unique friendship.
