When a pastor blames hurricanes on homosexuality, it will go viral. For all the fury directed at Dr. John P. McTernan, he makes a notable point in claiming that “…there is almost zero repentance by the church.” He adds, “The fear of God has disappeared from His people.” (emphasis mine)
While I actually do see many of God’s people repenting, there is a tendency for us to miss our own sins. God confronts “his people” on this error in the classic passage: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray
and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from
heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)
What would repentance by God’s people look like today? First, we would stop being entertained by calls for gay people to repent. This would lead to less judgment and distraction. Second, we would hold a much higher view of singleness – as Jesus and Paul did. This would offer more sustainable and satisfying marriages, which in turn would lead to fewer divorces and lower porn use.
This will not prevent natural disasters, but it will honor God and offer our children healthy families.
