Our marriage has been broken for so long: can it really be saved? After so many years of porn use or sexual hook-ups, is there really any hope of escape? While most of us would agree that God’s answer to these questions is a resounding yes, we all too often are left asking: But how? And when!
Adam and Eve possessed the fullness of God’s presence and perfectly reflected the image of God within them. At the fall of man, however, they were severed from their Creator. They exited the Garden and entered a world of many dangers. Fears raged. Temptations exploded. Work became exhausting. They instantly moved from serenity to survival. This was surely traumatic: the most anxiety-ridden moment in human history that continues to rattle through all of us today.
This fracture in connection to God is also a breaking of our identity in Him. Losing connection to and identity in Him touches every dimension of our lives. The singular light of God’s image reflecting His presence in and through us has become thousands of broken pieces of glorious light shining back on us. Like a mirror, His Light reveals our ugly places: weaknesses, wounds and sins. Whereas we once experienced His Glory, now we see only reflections of how far we fall short of it. The Glorious Light that once comforted now uncovers our hidden frailties eliciting shame and regret.
As Christians, we panic: it is not supposed to be this way! No wonder we so easily become consumed with trying to stop sinning. The more we try to stop, however, the more we seem to fail. If we are not careful, we will get lost in an endless cycle of trying to self-repair our brokenness. This can become yet another addiction in our lives.
Achieving sexual wholeness is impossible. With God, though, all things are possible! The question is: how do we experience this possibility? Join me next time to find out.
