Jesus calls us to continually look for ways to help those in need and be examples of his love! Winter is one of the hardest times for homeless LGBT+ youth, which is why, here at Lead Them Home, we have made it one of our objectives to mobilize the church to help LGBT+ youth in their area. You may be wondering, “What can I do as one person to make an impact?” Answer is — there is a lot you can do! Here are just 7 ideas:
1. INVITE friends who are LGBT+ to dinner.
This doesn’t just apply to homeless LGBT+ youth, but everyone. As we saw in Micah’s story, even something as simple as inviting someone to dinner can make a major difference. Do you know someone in your community who is LGBT+? Invite them over and get to know them.
2. SEND winter supplies to a local youth near you listed on our website.
Our team continues to work to expand our list of youth shelters around the country that serve LGBT+ youth and their lists of needs. Go to our Give Shelter page to enter our database and find a shelter near you, check out their list of needs, and send in supplies! You will be making a difference in the lives of young people.
3. PRAY for LGBT people in your community.
Many times, prayer is put at the end of our list of ways to help. But Jesus continually calls us to pray and assures us that it does make a real difference! You can click here, download our list of prayer requests for LGBT+ youth, and take 5 minutes a day to pray for people in your community and around the country.
4. EDUCATE yourself on issues LGBT+ youth face.
Education changes perspective. By learning more about LGBT+ issues, you will be preparing yourself to minister to LGBT+ people who come into your life. One of the best ways to get educated is to attend a Posture Shift Seminar or a Family Care Seminar. Go to the Posture Shift page to stay updated on events near you!
5. VOLUNTEER at a local youth shelter.
If you want to do something even more hands-on, take a look at our shelter list and contact one near you about the possibility of volunteering with them. If you’re a ministry leader or small group leader, consider bringing others along. If you’re a parent, you could even serve as a family.
6. SPEAK UP on the issues LGBT youth face to mobilize local churches
Jesus continually called the Church to help those in need, yet we still need more voices to mobilize churches around the country to help LGBT+ youth in their area. One simply way you can do so is to share Lead Them Home’s posts with your friends on Facebook.
7. GIVE to Lead Them Home.
When you give to Lead Them Home, you are helping our work with families to help prevent family rejection. Research continually shows that preventing family rejection is the greatest thing we can do to end LGBT+ youth homelessness. As we have said, prevention is the best solution.
