Today’s blog post outlines Day 2 of Posture Shift Intensives Colombia. Read about Day 1 here.
Going into the training, our biggest question was, “Can Posture Shift principles — initially tailored toward American pastors — translate as missional and biblical to pastors in Colombia?” In addition to Posture Shift literally being translated into a different language, would Posture Shift also translate smoothly to a different cultural context?
Contextualizing Posture Shift in Latin America
After an evening of processing, pastors returned on Day 2 to apply Day 1’s teaching with great passion. It was hard to stop the Q&A times because pastors were dedicated to conceptualizing our teaching for their context. It soon became apparent that God had richly blessed Day 1. Creativity on relational and outreach ideas revealed that pastors were diving head-on into ministry complexity. Each table came up with excellent approaches to complex ministry challenges.
“I thought it would be about a Posture Shift for them [LGBT+ people], but it was a Posture Shift for us.”
Once again, by the Holy Spirit, the missiological lens of Posture Shift has broken chains of immobilization and generated humility, listening, compassion, understanding, confession, repentance, and deep passion to correct the historical, long-standing errors of the church’s failure to engage LGBT+ people.
The insights for compassion and sensitivity flowed from pastors’ hearts. One attending pastor has been working with sexually broken people including prostitutes and sex trafficking victims for the last 20 years. He came into our training hesitant and suspicious. But at the end, he remarked:
“I have been doing work among sexually broken, trafficked and victimized peoples for two decades. Posture Shift is one of the best missional curricula I have ever encountered.”
On Sunday, we spent some time touring the Colombia countryside with the president of La Alianza and his family.
God richly blessed Day 2 and the trip as a whole. We have made many new friends, and many churches are pursuing more Posture Shift training for their teams.
“Liam,” who is 20 years old, experiences attraction to men, and is committed to celibacy, attended the training and bravely allowed us to interview him in front of 140 pastors. He did a beautiful job revealing the power of God working in his life. His story deeply moved the pastors hearts. We thank Liam for being courageous and allowing his story to help shift the posture of church leaders’ hearts.
Liam’s story will be featured in Guiding Families Second Edition, set to be released at the end of this month. Pre-order it today.
