This past weekend the Misión 17 18 Conference was held at a church in Bogota, Colombia. Excitingly, Lead Them Home was invited to share our missiological model for reaching and careful for LGBT+ people. The conference was centered around the verse John 17:18 which reads, “As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world” – a passage from Jesus’ high priestly prayer from the Garden of Gethsemane.
Josh Proctor, our Spanish-speaking Posture Shift instructor, gave two talks sharing an introduction to Posture Shift with around 100 attendees. The other conference speakers shared regarding issues such as cross-cultural missions, street evangelism, and theology of work. Many attendees shared they were very impacted by the message including one pastor who shared, “Our city needs this message!”
The Reality for LGBT+ People in Colombia
While politically the government has made many efforts to protect LGBT+ people, Colombian LGBT+ people still face many dangerous realities. Last year in Colombia, 109 LGBT+ people were killed which is an increase from previous years (Bogota.gov.co, 2018), and in Bogota, which has one of the largest LGBT+ communities in the world, 53 out of every 100 LGBT+ people has reported being attacked. (LGTBI Economista, 2016). Family rejection resulting in homelessness is also a major issue for LGBT+ youth in Colombia yet currently there is only one shelter in the country that helps homeless LGBT+ youth.
An attending government agent shared with us some of the unique and difficult realities LGBT+ youth in Colombia face. LGBT+ youth in Colombia face multiple risks of homeless and family rejection like those faced by LGBT+ youth around the world, but in Colombia, LGBT+ youth have also had to deal with the danger of violence and displacement by rebel and paramilitary forces.
