This month, we are announcing our official dates and cities for our Posture Shift 2020 Tour!

If you’re interested in getting trained on relational and missional skills in caring for LGBT+ individuals, our events are for you!

Three Training Options

Our 2020 tour features the following training options – open to anyone interested in attending:

 • 2-Hour Evening Event (Ottawa, Palm Beach, Denver, Dallas)
 • 2-Day Intensives (Ottawa, Denver, Dallas, Boston)
 • 2.5-day Posture Shift Training Licensure (Ottawa, Denver, Dallas, Boston)

Attend Posture Shift for Congregations, our 2-hour evening event, for a basic overview of Posture Shift that will equip you with biblically sound, practical skills on sharing Christ with LGBT+ loved ones.

Or gain specialized skills by registering for our 2-day Posture Shift Intensives.

Additionally, pastors, ministry leaders, and other approved staff of organizations have the option of getting licensed to teach our Posture Shift curriculum back in their own ministry context.

How to Register

*Note: We license organizations, not individuals. Those seeking licensure must do so with the approval of the church, ministry, or organization they represent.

For all events, learn more or get your tickets at postureshift.com/events. Group rates are available for Posture Shift Intensives. The more people you bring from your team, the more effectively you can implement a ‘Posture Shift’ at your church, ministry, school, or organization.

Questions? Contact us at info@postureshift.com.

We will also be visiting the following cities to host privately contracted events for individual church and ministry staff.

As Lead Them Home enters our 15th year of ministry, we reflect on God’s faithfulness in the past and direction for the future. For the past decade, we have sought God’s wisdom for a specific vision focus:

2010: “Authentic: One Message, All Audiences”
2011: “Disciplined: Every Word Counts”
2012: “A Gospel of Rejection Has No Power”
2013: “High Growth: Build Strong Credential”
2014: “Honor Leaders: Train Teams Top-Down”
2015: “Write/Publish Posture Shift Curriculum”
2016: “Justice Initiatives: Every Action Counts”
2017: “Prevent Rejection: Publish Guiding Families”
2018: “Replication Growth: Train Trainers”
2019: “The Year of Courageous Leadership”
2020: “The Year of Global Reach”

Celebrating God’s Work in 2019

This past year, our vision focus was “The Year of Courageous Leadership.” We called upon courageous leaders to embrace complexity, navigate backlash and misunderstanding, continue to honor God in their beliefs, generously extend Christ’s Gospel to marginalized people.

Here are just a few highlights from this past year:

 • Posture Shift: Over 5,000 courageous leaders experienced Posture Shift across nearly 40 events in 12 states and provinces. In our Train50 initiative to “train trainers,” licensure was made available at every 2-day event. Our online Posture Shift Licensed Trainer Portal was launched. Dozens of leaders committed to “Get Trained & Train Others.”
 • Guiding Families translation: has been translated and published in Swedish. Translation to Spanish is complete and in final steps in publication process. This month, a ministry partner joined with us to translate Guiding Families into German.
 • Guiding Families: The Essentials Edition: We released an abridged version of Guiding Families that contains 42 pages of the most essential content – for swift reading, comprehension, and application by leaders and parents.
 • Justice Initiatives: Two LGBT+ teens became recipients of our Justice Initiative Scholarship to continue pursuing college degrees after being disowned. Over 50 shelters and drop-in shelters have been added to our database of shelters meeting practical needs of homeless LGBT+ youth.
 • Nourishing Faith: We continue to hear stories from pastors, parents, and LGBT+ individuals about relationships with family, leaders, and Jesus Christ being restored or strengthened.

2020: The Year of Global Reach

Fifteen years ago, Lead Them Home pioneered a missiological approach for loving LGBT+ people in the church. We established four missional goals to create a new church history in which LGBT+ people will be valued, included, and engaged well: Enhance Church Inclusion, Increase Family Acceptance, Protect Against Victimization, and Nourish Faith Identity.

Church leaders face a variety of cultural, linguistic, and political contexts. To equip these leaders, we will translate resources into German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Mandarin. We will launch a digital training portal to resource leaders in every nation. And we will hire new staff to continue not only to grow, but to multiply our reach and ability to provide leaders with the best resources on biblically sound LGBT+ inclusion and care.

We will train and equip more leaders. We will engage and care for more families and individuals. More vulnerable lives will be saved. More family relationships will be restored. More parent-child relational fractures will be prevented. We’ll make churches, families, and homes safer in order to nourish faith identity in LGBT+ lives.

We invite you to join us in praying, seeking, and investing in the Year of Global Reach. Give securely online, or mail a check to:

Fifteen years ago, Lead Them Home pioneered a missiological approach for loving LGBT+ people in the church. We established four missional goals to create a new church history in which LGBT+ people will be valued, included, and engaged well.

Enhance Church Inclusion | Increase Family Acceptance | Protect Against Victimization | Nourish Faith Identity

Along the way, God led us to create two of North America’s leading platforms for achieving these missional goals. Posture Shift became the go-to training platform for church leaders. We have trained over 60,000 leaders (and counting). Guiding Families became the leading print publication for every pastor, every parent, and all who care for LGBT+ loved ones. Over 40,000 copies are in print.

Our funding from training and consulting, publications, and donor partners has dramatically grown over the last five years as demand for our resources has risen.

God’s blessing on our work is evident as we train and equip more leaders, consult and advise more churches, and engage and care for more families and individuals.

Our growth requires an expanded team to carry out our mission with excellence. We are asking you to invest in our work with a year-end 2019 gift. Our need for $200,000 will allow us to accomplish the following:

$50,000 to replenish our print inventory of Guiding Families and Posture Shift Course Handbook.

In 2018, we founded Posture Shift Books which is our publishing affiliate for all print and digital resources. We operate an online bookstore and perform all editorial, publication, and sales fulfillment services. We need $50,000 to immediately issue an order for new print inventory. Guiding Families alone has already produced a payback of production costs less than one (1) year after its release. Printing at least cost requires bulk purchase.

This investment will allow us to purchase 5,000 copies of Guiding Families and
3,000 copies of Posture Shift for Church Leaders (Course Handbook) and 3,000
copies our upcoming Posture Shift for Congregations (Study Guide).

$100,000 to hire two full time staff (or external professionals) to advance our digital platform.

The digital space requires high quality technology and video production staff (or services). Investment in upgrading our digital platform is estimated to earn a full payback within just two (2) years. As a leader in a high demand area (training and consulting resources on LGBT+ inclusion and care), we can remain a leader only by moving into a digital platform. This will be necessary to effectively train and equip leaders and accomplish our vision and missional goals.

$50,000 to release Posture Shift Books publications in Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Mandarin.

While North America has been ahead of the cultural curve on matters of faith, sexuality and gender, advancement in civil rights will rapidly move forward in nations across the globe. We have demand for our publications in multiple languages. Serving the broader Body of Christ with resources that faithfully honor God and radically love people is an opportunity before us. Our translated resources will be sold as print-on-demand or in digital format. We will start with Guiding Families Essentials Edition in 2020.

This $200,000 will allow us to access people resources and services to advance our vision of loving LGBT+ people in the church. We will train and equip more leaders. We will engage and care for more families and individuals. More vulnerable lives will be saved. More family relationships will be restored. More parent-child relational fractures will be prevented. We will make churches, families, and homes safer in order to nourish faith identity in LGBT+ lives.

Your gift is an investment in the Gospel advancing among LGBT+ people. It will help us create a new church history where the Body of Christ lays down our lives to bring the presence of God and the invitations of Jesus into vulnerable peoples’ lives.

I ask for your investment in our work on Giving Tuesday or by year end. To become a new Donor Partner or continue as a Donor Partner, invest today.

We are deeply grateful for your generous investment in our work at this time.

Posture Shift: Private vs. Open-Registration Training Events

The majority of Posture Shift trainings are privately contracted events that equip church or ministry staff to address unique challenges within their own ministry context. This event is a private training for a specific church staff, which means it is not open for registration. However, scheduling events close together in time and location reduces logistical expenses. For that reason, we encourage leaders in the area to consider scheduling their private training within a week of the October 4 training.

Note: Lead Them Home will also be in Seattle in mid-November. Read more.

Live Near Seattle? Schedule Your Private Training This Fall

Are you a decision-making leader in your church, Christian school, parachurch ministry, or other organization? Find out how to schedule your fall training and save: start the conversation at leadthemhome.org/proposal.

Other Options

Lead Them Home also offers open-registration events in select cities through the year. Open-registration events are available to anyone — leaders, laypersons, parents, and relatives of LGBT+ loved ones — and you can register online. Earlybird specials and group discounts are often available, so talk to your team, colleagues, or family soon to plan your arrangements! Open-registration events often see attendance from leaders who are local, out of state, or even out of the country!

The post New Study Confirms Complexity of Sexual Orientation Cause appeared first on Lead Them Home.

]]>
Is there such a thing as a gay gene?

This has been the decades-long debate related to the causality of sexual orientation. For years, scientists have wondered if sexual orientation could be traced to a single biological factor. Some would doubt sexual orientation has a root in biology at all.

But a new study shows it is not so simple.

According to a study published on August 29th in the journal Science, there is no single “gay gene.” Instead, the study finds that sexual orientation seems to be shaped by a number of factors, both environmental and biological.

The study is the largest one to date with more than 480,000 participants from the U.S. and the U.K.

These research findings further validates the reality that the origins of attractions are a complex topic and probably vary from person to person. The one certainty is that no one simply chooses their attractions.

The study validates the idea that sexual orientation is not shaped by one simple biological cause or one simple environmental cause — but rather that our attractions are shaped by a complex web of “nature and nurture” that can vary from person to person.

Asking the Wrong Question

Many times, we as Christians, wanting to understand better, ask the question, “What causes same-sex attraction?” Ultimately, we may never know, but the good news is that we don’t have to know in order to care well.

In John 9, the disciples get stuck in a similar cycle of thinking. They ask Jesus why a certain man was born blind. “Whose fault is it, Jesus?” they asked. The Bible says Jesus responded, “You’re asking the wrong question. You’re looking for someone to blame. There is no such cause-effect here. Look instead for what God can do” (John 9:3, MSG).

Every person born into this world is born into a complex web of circumstances. Amidst the reality of these circumstances, God calls us to serve, seek to understand, and bear with one another — and trust Him with the outcome.

Trusting God, Loving People, Embracing Complexity

No factor of our biology or environment will ever excuse us from Jesus’ command to trust God and love people born and raised amidst complex influences.

We need to stop asking the wrong question and instead focus on the implications of human complexity: namely, that there is no determinant factor that decides whether we should love someone like Jesus.

God calls us to be agents of His love to all people — gay, straight, bisexual, transgender, or anything else.

Take initiative to keep open conversation on gender, sexuality, and suicide.

The post LGBT+ Teen Suicide: Why Talking About it Helps appeared first on Lead Them Home.

Trigger warning: The following article discusses the topic of suicide.

Note: If you or someone you know is suicidal, please call the Trevor Project Hotline at 1-866-488-7386 or the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255.

In the past year, the CDC has reported that LGBT+ youth are still at higher risk for suicide than straight and cisgender youth.1,2 As today is World Suicide Awareness Day, it is imperative to know how to protect those at highest risk for suicide. Guiding Families notes that bullying and family rejection are the two leading risk factors for LGBT+ youth.3

Silence Equals Rejection

When a teen comes out to their family, it is ideally not the only conversation, but the first of many. If a teen is met with silence after coming out, they will perceive it as rejection. This perceived rejection stemming from silence is what we call “family disconnection,” and the suicide risk in disconnected families is nearly identical to that of rejecting families.4

If a teen is met with silence or a lack of ongoing conversation after coming out, their risk of suicide is nearly identical to a teen who is blatantly rejected by their family. Take initiative to keep open conversation on gender, sexuality, and suicide.

While already at higher risk of suicide, LGBT+ teens from rejecting families are twice as likely to attempt suicide as those from accepting families.5 With this in mind, we must refuse to fall into silence when a teen comes out to us.

Stepping Out of Silence

If we are to protect young lives, silence is not an options. Here are three ways to step out of silence:

First, be intentional about follow-up conversations. If your teen has come out to you, it means they trust you. It is okay, then, to ask them if you can talk with them about their sexuality or gender identity again. Follow up conversations can be beneficial for both you and your teen.

Second, be aware of the possibility of bullying. Your teen might not share details about bullying at first. You should never assume they are being bullied. But let your teen know they can always come to you if someone is hurting them.

Third, know the warning signs for suicide. Make sure your teen knows it is okay to admit they are not feeling okay. Often, parents are unaware of a teen’s suicidal ideation.6 Take the first step to talk to your teen about the risk of suicide.

Further Resources

Talking with your teen about suicide is difficult, but important. Here are some further resources to help guide conversations with your LGBT+ teens.

One of our four missional goals at Lead Them Home is to protect against victimization of LGBT+ individuals. It is easy to think that as more rights have been given to LGBT+ people in our country that this objective is not needed.

According to a new study released by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University in San Bernardino, hate crimes have risen in the last year. In 2018, the institution reported that hate crimes rose by 9% in major U.S. cities — even though overall crime rates in major cities have declined around the country.

This is the fifth consecutive year-over-year increase in hate crimes in the United States. According to the study, “the most common victims for hate crimes reported to police in major cities in 2018 were African Americans, Jews, and gays.” This year alone, 12 black transgender women have been murdered.

Sadly, this is the current reality within our country. It makes Lead Them Home’s mission to protect against victimization that much more important each day. And through that support and safety, we pray and work so that each person may also experience and understand the love of God for them.

Lead Them Home will be in St. Louis, Missouri, in early November for private speaking engagement.

Posture Shift is the North American Church’s most trusted training seminar on biblically sound LGBT+ inclusion and care. Learn more at postureshift.com.

Posture Shift: Private Trainings vs. Open-Registration Events

The majority of Posture Shift trainings are privately contracted events that equip church or ministry staff to address unique challenges within their own ministry context. This event is a private training for a specific church staff, which means it is not open for registration. However, scheduling events close together in time and location reduces logistical expenses. For that reason, we encourage leaders in the area to consider scheduling their private training within a week of the November 11 training.
